Shattered glass was my found object, which is the inspiration for the struggle of women breaking the glass ceiling. The larger flower, below the ceiling, is symbolic of empowering women to grow with strength through gender driven barriers. The structure symbolizes the difficulty and often-indirect route to a full expression of a woman’s abilities and talents. With a lever and help from others, one is able to break through the glass ceiling and propel (ascend) past it.
“Give me a lever and a place to stand and I will move the earth”
As women find their own unique levers to stand on, they will shatter the glass ceiling and rise.
I am a metalsmith and a practicing architect.
All my work is inspired by
• a clean modern aesthetic
• love of details and connections
• materiality (tactile and visual qualities of materials)
• structure in nature
I collaborate with my sister Terry Cole Sullivan and we have a jewelry line, Cole + Cole, which can be found at colepluscole.com. I also practice architecture and my work can be found at www.cannonarchitects.com.
