This work was inspired by a donor pin from a Red Cross blood drive. This small plastic pin led me to imagine bloods purpose. Blood is the fuel of life, our heart the engine. With that notion in mind I could see how I could employ the elements in the Halstead kit to illustrate that concept.
Mana Hewitt received an MFA from the University of South Carolina where she is a Senior Instructor and the Director of Undergraduate Studies in the School of Visual Art of the University of South Carolina. Her work has taken many forms over the years including ceramics, painting and metal and is included in numerous collections including the Federal Reserve, Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art, the Arkansas Center of Contemporary Art, the SCANA Corporation, First Citizens Bank Headquarters, the Columbia Museum of Art, and the South Carolina State Museum.
