Lindsey Snell

Merits Brooch

Materials: Brass, leather

Dimensions: 2.5 x 2 x .18 inches

I am interested in the ways in which adornment is used as a method to both reveal and conceal issues of identity, memory, loss, and mourning. Engaging with archaic materials and forms I work to visually disrupt traditional designs while calling attention to the complexity of an individual’s relationship to an object.

About the Artist:

Lindsey received her BFA in Craft with a concentration in Metals from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2011. She continued her studies at Illinois receiving a MFA in Metal in 2014. Her one-of-a-kind jewelry, installations, and adornments have been exhibited nationally and her studio practice continues to include her work as a researcher and writer. She currently lives and works in Portland, OR.

"I have always been drawn to adornment and objects of material culture for their connection to sentiment and nostalgia. I am interested in the ways in which adornment is used as a method to both reveal and conceal issues of identity, memory, loss, and mourning. Engaging with archaic materials and forms I work to visually disrupt traditional designs while calling attention to the complexity of an individual’s relationship to an object. Although adornment is connected with innumerable subjects, my work focuses on adornments that relate to and reflect on the body of the wearer, the body of the onlooker, and the surrounding cultural landscape."
